Survey Reveals Information Technology Sector Leading Salary Growth in the Region

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HireStrategy, a Reston, Virginia-based staffing services firm and Addison Group company, today released the results of its 10th annual salary survey examining the income levels across four major categories: information technology, sales & marketing, finance & accounting and HR & administrative throughout the 2015 calendar year. Each year, HireStrategy conducts its proprietary salary survey based on job orders, candidate salaries and intimate knowledge of the market to create a detailed analysis of what employees are actually paid in the region. The survey found the D.C. market is healthy across entry, mid and executive level salaries.

Based on the survey results HireStrategy also identified several market drivers outside of salaries alone. Education-related roles are particularly in demand, including online schools, education tools and training platforms, which have helped buoy the market, and as a result, compensation levels. While government-related roles are always a strong job-creator in the region, education, along with the biotechnology and financial services sectors, have driven significant growth.

Additional key takeaways from the survey include:

Information Technology was the strongest sector in 2015 as companies were once again hiring high quality technical professionals, especially in emerging growth and middle market sectors. 2016 promises continued strength in technology with above average compensation increases. Titles in high demand include DevOps engineers, full-stack engineers and front-end engineers.

In terms of compensation changes, DevOps engineers have seen a spike across the category, rising $15-20K in the past two years. Because most software companies today leverage the SaaS delivery model, demand for talent has never been higher.

Compensation levels have increased moderately for Sales & Marketing, while overall commission payments increased more significantly. The New Year should bring moderate increases in base salaries and continued increases in commissions paid.

The Finance & Accounting segment showed continued improvement in 2015 in employment opportunity and in compensation. Employers are saying that 2016 hiring will focus in the operational and regulatory areas with above average compensation increases. Senior accountants, controllers and directors of finance specifically are in high demand.

HR & Administrative was strong throughout 2015 and setup 2016 on a strong footing. Increases in compensation should be moderate but among the best across all of the segments HireStrategy services. The most in-demand job title is contract recruiters, which has seen a three percent increase year-over-year. HR assistant roles and junior-level executive assistants have largely stayed consistent year-over-year.
HireStrategy leveraged 4,000 job orders from January-December 2015 across information technology, sales & marketing, finance & accounting and HR & administrative industries to produce the study.
